Group3 PCI Loop Controller Cards (LC1 and LC3)

                          INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

                       For Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP

                                 20 May 2003

Floppy Disk or CD ROM:

The installation files listed below are supplied on a floppy disk with each
loop controller. They are also supplied on either a floppy disk or a CD ROM,
with the various software libraries provided by Group3.
The files may also be first copied to a local hard drive for installation
in which case, modify references in the following instructions to
  accommodate this.

  Floppy disk:
The files are located in the sub directory \PCI.
The following instructions are based on this.

  CD ROM:
The files are located in the sub directory \Memory Drivers\PCI.
Modify references in the following instructions to accommodate this.
Files copied from a CD ROM will be "read-only". It is recommended that
copied files have the read-only attribute removed after copying them to
the hard drive. To this end it is simpler to copy all files from the
CD ROM in one go, remove the read-only attributes then perform the
    driver installation from there.

Files:

The PCI installation directory contains the following files:
    INSTALL.TXT this file
PCI_LC.INF loop controller plug-&-play information file
PCI_LIB.DLL for applications to use driver
    PCI_LIB.H for user developed interfaces
WDREG.EXE installation tool for Windows 95/NT/2000/XP
WDREG16.EXE installation tool for Windows 98/ME
    WINDRVR6.INF driver plug-&-play information file
    WINDRVR6.SYS Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP run-time driver
    WINDRVR6.VXD Windows 95 run-time driver
WIN_2K.DOC technical note for re-installing to Windows 2000

The installation media also contains the following program file:
LC_FIND.EXE test program: locates installed loop controllers

*****************************************************************************
BOARD Identification:

The Group3 PCI and ISA loop controller cards are easily distinguishable:
    PCI loop controller card:
Each card has a rotary switch on its top edge of the circuit board.
Each card has six circular holes in its rear metal bracket.
    ISA loop controller card:
Each card has a set of jumpers on its circuit board.
Each card has one or three elliptical hole in its rear metal bracket.

*****************************************************************************
A Note about running WDREG.EXE (or WDREG16.EXE):

Use of WDREG.EXE is required in the following sections. This is a DOS
command-line utility that displays the results of each operation on the
screen. For this reason it is useful to run it from a DOS window rather
than the more usual "Start - Run" facility provided in the Windows menu.
If run form the "Start - Run" facility the window is closed as soon as the
operation completes and the displayed results are lost. If problems are
experienced during installation and the verification steps are failing, the
  displayed results may be helpful.

Opening a DOS window:
Early versions of Windows have a "DOS Prompt" ICON that can be selected from
a menu or double-clicked on the desktop to produce a DOS window. Some
don't. In these cases, click the Windows "Start" button, click "Run", then
type in: "command" ("cmd" for Windows 2000/XP) and click "OK". A DOS window
will appear with a prompt on the left side where DOS commands can be
  typed in.

Closing a DOS window:
To close the DOS window after running WDREG.EXE, type "exit" then press the
  Enter key.

WINDOWS 2000:

Note:
The driver-model for Windows 2000 changed at service pack 3 and the original
Group3 driver will not work with that version of Windows 2000 (or later).
WINDRVR6.SYS or later is required: first released by Group3 on 29 April 2003.

Re-Installation:
If installing a newer version of the Group3 driver to a Windows 2000
computer, first read the technical note: WIN_2K.DOC.

Installation:
The PCI loop controller card(s) may be already installed in the computer
prior to commencing these steps but they must not be already registered to
  work with WINDRVR6.SYS.
If this proves difficult, remove the loop controller card(s) first.

 1. Insert the floppy disk labeled "Loop Controller Installation Disk"
    into the floppy disk drive.
 2. Copy the file PCI_LIB.DLL from the floppy disk (PCI directory)
to the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory on the hard drive.

entered command-line MUST specify the full path to the file WINDRVR6.INF.
 4. Install the loop controller plug-&-play information file using WDREG.EXE:
Refer to the note about running WDREG.EXE above.
At the DOS prompt, type "a:\pci\wdreg -inf a:\pci\pci_lc.inf install"
    then press the Enter key.
Note: the installation files needn't be in the a:\pci directory but the
entered command-line MUST specify the full path to the file PCI_LC.INF.
  - If there are loop controller cards already installed in the computer they
will be detected by Windows at this time and a "Found New Hardware" window
    will appear briefly.
  - Otherwise:
 5. Remove the floppy disk, power-off the computer, insert the Group3 PCI loop
controller card(s) into any vacant PCI slot and power-on the computer.
They will be detected by Windows at this time and a "Found New Hardware"
window will appear briefly then disappear.

Verification:
 1. Driver and plug-&-play device found:
Right-click the My Computer icon, select properties, select the "Hardware"
tab then click the "Device Manager" button.
There should be an entry labeled "Group3 Loop Controllers" with
    a sub-entry labeled "Group3 PCI Loop Controller".
